Spain has a wide range of payment methods available for consumers and businesses. From traditional debit and credit cards to new fintech solutions, the Spanish payments ecosystem has transformed significantly in recent years.
Credit cards are one of the most widely used payment methods in Spain. The main networks are Visa and Mastercard, although American Express is also accepted at higher-end establishments. Common fees include: an annual maintenance fee (between €0 and €50), an ATM cash withdrawal fee (between 2% and 4% of the amount), and a foreign currency exchange fee (between 1% and 3%).
Debit cards are linked directly to your current account. They allow purchases and cash withdrawals without generating credit. The main advantage is that they do not accrue interest, since the amount is deducted directly from the available balance. They are the most recommended payment method for ATM transactions, as fees tend to be lower than with credit cards.
Contactless payment lets you make purchases by tapping your card or mobile phone on the payment terminal. In Spain, purchases up to €50 do not require a PIN. The main mobile payment systems are Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, which work with most Spanish banks.
Neobanks like Revolut, N26 and Wise offer cards with especially advantageous terms for travellers: real exchange rates, free cash withdrawals up to a monthly limit and fully digital management. However, they may have limitations at some Spanish ATMs. Check each provider's terms before travelling.
When withdrawing cash from an ATM that does not belong to your bank, a cash withdrawal fee is usually charged. This fee varies depending on the ATM owner and the card issuer.
